Documentary On Street Cats In Turkey Coming To Hot Docs

“In Istanbul, the cat is more than just a cat. The cat embodies the indescribable chaos, the culture, and the uniqueness that is the essence of Istanbul.” - Y. Barlas

Official Selection at over 14 international film fests including
Sheffield Doc Fest, Full Frame and VIFF

TORONTO, January 19, 2017 - Street cats have been an important part of Istanbul for millennia, witnesses to the rise and fall of empires, and thought by many to embody the city’s soul. Recently, their unique relationship to the urban centre has begun to change, thanks in no small part to its fast ascension to global hub status.

KEDi, a new documentary by Istanbul native Ceyda Torun, explores the city as seen through the eyes of seven street cats, shedding light on the distinctive bond that the felines share with local humans. The film is opening in Toronto on February 17 at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, and in Vancouver on March 13 at the Vancity Theatre, from Blue Ice Docs.

Sari, a yellow tabby with young kittens to feed, is a persistent hustler, a quality that has earned her the love of a local shopkeeper. Aslan Parçasi, better known as “little lion”, is rewarded by a famous fish restaurant for keeping it mice-free. Psikopat is a tough cookie who fears no one, respected by local humans for her boldness. Duman, a little chunky thanks to his gourmet diet, has become a fixture at an upscale deli, where he refuses to beg. Deniz is known as the Ferikoy Organic Market’s social butterfly, Gamsız is a tough fighter with a sweet face that can charm any human, and Bengü is sweet and cuddly, beloved by everyone in her neighbourhood.

“Every year that I returned to the city, I saw it change in ways that made it less and less recognizable, except for the cats; they were the one constant element, becoming synonymous with the city itself and ultimately, embodying its soul,” said director Torun. “This film is, in many ways, a love letter to those cats and the city, both of which are changing in ways that are unpredictable.”

An official selection at over 14 international film festivals, including Sheffield, Full Frame and VIFF, KEDi is director Ceyda Torun’s feature debut.
