In 2007 my family and I decided to foster a cat for the Mississauaga Humane Society. They asked if we could take in Edward, a cat they described as a 'shadow cat'. He was scared and under weight and living in a pet adoption room at a pet store surrounded by kittens. It only took us a couple of days to decide to adopt Edward, we didn't think anyone else would ever want to adopt him. He was so scared of everything and ended up hiding under my parent's bed for the next three months. Every day after school I would fish him out from under the bed and cuddle him. He purred so loudly! He clearly wanted some human contact!
We've had Eddie for almost 5 years now and he is such an amazing cat! He still gets nervous of feet and people laughing really loudly but now he sleeps on the couch instead of under it. He loves pats and being brushed and boy does he love his food!
Edward's extreme shyness was the inspiration for a project I started called Second Hope Circle. The website features special needs and hard to place pets in Ontario from participating shelters and rescues. Animals like Eddie can have a hard time finding an adoptive home so I try and help them by using the website and social media to gain them more attention. Eddie is not only an integral part of our family but inspired a project that helps other rescue pets like him!
