Do Your Neighbours' Dogs Have You Barking Mad?

All Irene Szabo wants is a good night’s sleep.

But the 79-year-old widow, who recently had skin cancer treatment and eye surgery, said she has been sleep-deprived since April when her neighbour’s black poodle began barking in the middle of the night and early in the morning.

“It’s getting worse and worse,” she said Friday from her sixth-floor apartment in a seniors building at 2877 Ellesmere Rd. “I get so upset and nervous, I start to shake and as soon as I drift off to sleep, it barks again. I’m also diabetic, so I need at least eight hours of sleep.”

Szabo said she wrote a complaint to the landlord, Interfaith Homes, in April and the property manager sent one of his staffers to speak to the woman who owns the dog.

 But the barking continued across the hall and Szabo followed up with the landlord again last month when she found dog urine in the corridor.

“The landlord told me I was the only one complaining. They told me to work it out with her,” she said.
When she went over and tried to speak to her neighbour about the yapping dog, “She told me she has a right to have a dog and that I can ‘F’ myself,” said Szabo, who has since had tranquilizers prescribed for her. Read more
