Let's Talk Animal Movies - What's The Best? How About The Worst? Is There One Scene In Particular That Moves You To Tears Or Hysterics?

Who hasn't had a good cry while watching a film where the star character is a beloved pet? Here's a true story that I hope my best friend doesn't read. For years, I have been petrified of flying. Sweat, panic attack, near pee myself terrified! Two years ago I flew to California to meet my new nephew, and of course my friend came with me, as she's family, and because I knew I would feel a tad more comfortable simply having her close. For a chunk of the flight, my friend decided to watch a cute little movie called "Hotel For Dogs" and suggested I do the same, though I declined as I knew watching the flick would take away from my experience of clawing at the arm rests. It's a good thing I didn't watch the movie, as I wouldn't have been nearly as distracted as I was watching my friend run the full gamut of emotions while viewing the film. At one point, she started laughing hysterically, and when I caught her she looked at me as if to say, "I know this movie isn't all that great and has no chance at Oscar glory, but for some reason it's really MOVING me!" The highlight however, came near the end of the film. I still can't remember the exact scene, but when I turned to my friend, it was a sight to behold. There she was, my best friend who I have always relied as the more emotionally stable in the relationship, having a near breakdown. We're not talking sniffles here. She was full out bawling (loudly!), and for some reason the tears just wouldn't stop. At the same time, she was laughing hysterically as she herself couldn't figure out how this little film had moved her so. I guess sometimes film's just touch us, though I must say it was a wonderful moment, me not being the focal point of embarrassment.

What animal films or scenes are the ones that you always remember? For me there's always the ending of "Old Yeller", or Dory in "Finding Nemo" singing, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming....". For a great watch from start to finish, my choice is usually "Best In Show", which includes the awesome line, "I went to one of those obedience schools once. Everything was going fine until they spilled hot candle wax on my private parts."

How about you? Tell us your favourite movie or scene, or are there any that are just so bad they're good? Or just plain bad?

  1. Old Yeller traumatized me for life - I saw it as a young child & it just broke my heart - seriously. I am 62 and have never forgotten it.

  2. It's gross how many times I've watched best in show, especially in the past 2 months. I worked at a pet store and saw a lot of the humorous personalities seen in the movie. Two left feet, pine nuts, and busy bee!
