(STAFF) -- A dead dog was found wrapped in a towel and placed in a cardboard box outside the Barrie SPCA animal shelter on Thursday morning. Volunteers and staff at the Patterson Road facility were doing morning cleanup, feeding and medication when the discovery was made near the shelter's back parking lot.
SPCA officials say the dog appears to be an older female long-haired chihuahua mix. It was "very underweight and in poor body condition." Shelter officials say no note was left with the animal, nor was there a voice mail indicating that the dog had been hit by a car, or whether it was dead before being placed in the box. Branch manager Melissa Bainbridge said shelter staff are "upset and baffled" by the gruesome discovery. She said the dog will be sent to the University of Guelph for a necropsy. Anyone with information is asked to call the Barrie SPCA at 705-728-7311, ext. 2 and ask for the investigations department.
